Paul Kenton has a lucid lineal style. He cuts through the canvas with animated lines that create simple yet distinct cityscapes.
He forgoes banal "photographic" reproductions in favor of energetic interpretations of some the worlds most iconic city views.
Paul Kenton's cityscapes find themselves between reality and complete abstraction. His choice of iconic city views combined with his expressive style create truly unique images.
For the basis of his paintings Kenton employs a technique known as "drip painting" whereby the paint is dripped from the end of the paintbrush onto the canvas. This allows for the lines to be free flowing and less rigid. It is a technique most famously used by Jackson Pollock.
Born in Derby, Kenton spent his formative years in Devon. It was here
he developed his love of surfing, which subsequently took him around
the world.
Since he was a young boy Kenton also showed a love for art and winning
a colouring contest at 12 fueled his desire to become an artist.
However, he faced a set back when he was rejected from art school. But
this was not to hold him back for long as he successfully gained a
grant from the Princes Youth Business Trust which allowed him to
become a full-time painter.
Kenton cites Monet as an early influence on his work, drawing
particularly on his ability to capture the mood of his subject.
Hailed by the Times as one the UK's leading artists specialising in
cityscapes, Kenton continues to create stunning work and was asked to
participate in last years prestigious "Elephant Parade".
